Ciena unveils WaveRouter for Converged metro network

Ciena – a world supplier of WaveRouter has been unveiled by equipment as a purpose-built router that is designed to work with the metro network. WaveRouter will transform metro traffic to meet bandwidth-hungry applications, including 5G, high speed Internet, corporate services and cloud.

This router was designed to address the needs of the service providers who are struggling with increased bandwidth demands brought about by the services. WaveRouter architecture is scalable from 6Tb/s all the way up to 192Tb/s. It provides flexibility for growing networks.

WaveRouter’s unique design combines traditional chassis and leaf-spine design, using Ciena’s WaveLogicCoherent optics combined with intelligent multilayer control create a flexible, new hybrid architecture. A single router platform can combine IP, computational, and optical functions, making this a one-stop solution for metro network. WaveRouter’s “high-performance, user-friendly, and environmentally friendly coherent routing solution” would make it a platform architecture best suited for the integrated metro network.

Maximizing Upgradeability

WaveRouter’s design would help network operators reduce trade-offs in terms of space, power, cooling, and scalability, making it a “cost-effective and sustainable” solution. According to Sterling Perrin is Senior Principal Analyst with Heavy Reading, “Metro networks are ready for modernization, driven by requirements for sustainability, scale, reliability, cloud adaptability, and lower costs.” A recent survey conducted by Heavy ReadingMany operators are interested in changing the design of their metros. Ciena’s WaveRouter would meet the needs of the industry.

“The new router offers a sustainable, cost-effective, and energy-efficient solution for operators looking to converge their networks,” said Scott McFeely, SVP, Global Products and Services, Ciena.

Scott McFeely Senior Vice president, Global Products and Services Ciena, stated, “WaveRouter adopts a novel approach, integrating the best in IP, coherent optics, and flexible photonics powered by multi-layer operations for meaningful performance and energy gains. You can also find out more about the following: new router offers a sustainable, cost-effective, and energy-efficient solution for operators looking to converge their networks and gain a competitive advantage.”

The WaveRouterThe third quarter of the year 2023 will see this technology available. Its features include integrated pluggable coherent optics, which would deliver “flexible, high-power transport at the lowest cost per bit.” The Buy Tickets Now! Also, it provides slots that are universal for fabric interfaces and I/O to increase upgradeability. It can be deployed flexibly in non-adjacent racks and rows, with “energy-efficient cooling and cabling, and secure, pay-as-you-grow power distribution” to help operators achieve their environmental and sustainability objectives.

WaveRouter’s extensible Switch fabricIt would improve performance and scalability without impacting operation. Elastic compute allows the router to grow without losing anything. WaveRouter is also compatible with Ciena’s 5100 and 8100 Families for optimal operating efficiency.
