Apple has announced iOS 17, which will change the way you use your iPhone to call, send texts and view information. iOS 17 will bring updates to FaceTime, Messages and the phone app to make your iPhone feel more intuitive and personal, the company revealed Monday during its Worldwide Developers Conference.
iOS 16 released in the last software update introduced the capability to edit and “unsend” iMessage messages, Apple Pay Later as well as a major revamp to the lockscreen, a revamped notification system, and Live Activities. The additions were not all released at the same time, but rather spread out over a series of iOS updates.

The same can be expected for iOS 17. It will probably release just prior to the launch of the iPhone 15, as rumored.
Contact Posters
Contact Posters are designed to enhance your business cards.
In iOS 16, we had customizable lock screens. iOS 17 brings a change to your iPhone’s Contact Cards that makes them more appealing. Contact Posters combine beautiful contact images and emoji with sleek fonts to create a stunning presentation that appears when your phone rings or you use other apps.
Customize the Contact Poster in a similar way to personalize your Lock Screen. Choose a color, font or photo and you’re done.
AirDrop is now easier to use
AirDrop is getting a makeover in iOS 17. Bring your iPhone near another’s and you can share Contact Posters, photos, videos, or start a Shared Activity using Share Play. Apple is Apple. So, of course, the word NameDrop exists to help you share your contact poster with someone else. It’s great that you get to choose which contact information is shared. NameDrop is compatible with Apple Watches, iPhones, and other devices. The NameDrop feature reminds of how I “bumped” a contact when the iPhone was first released.
Amazon Echo Show on your iPhone with Standby
iOS 17 includes a new attractive display that displays photos, widgets, and information when your iPhone charges.
iOS 17 includes a new feature that is useful when you don’t have your iPhone in your hand. You can get full-screen information when your iPhone is lying on its back while MagSafe charges. Standby is a feature that mimics the functionality of many smart devices, including Amazon Echo Show.
New screen displays the clock, photos, widgets, and Live Activities. Nearly all are customizable. This is similar to the iPhone 14 Pro’s Always-On Display and Nightstand Mode on Apple Watch.
By swiping left or right on the standby screen you can see your favorite moments and photos. iOS 17 also automatically rotates images in order to select the ones that best fit the display.
The widgets can be viewed in standby. For instance, you could see the weather or Apple Home’s smart controls, as well as your favourite third-party widget. You can see live events, such as the results of sports matches or the status of food deliveries.
Standby is able to remember the “setup”, or preferred view, for each location you use MagSafe.
Journal is now available on the App Store
Journal, a new Apple App for iOS 17, creates suggestions that are personalized to help you write. The suggestions come from the information stored on your iPhone such as photos, workouts, locations, and music.
Journal allows you to choose a specific moment (such as “morning at Ocean Beach” and begin writing). It is possible to schedule reminders to prompt you to write. It is possible to mark important events so you may reflect later.
Live Voicemail
As a voicemail recording is taking place, you can view a live transcription.
Voicemail is another new feature in iOS 17. You’ll be able to see the live transcription of a voicemail message in real-time when someone leaves you a call. Live Voicemail, the new service from Google is similar to my dad’s old answering machine when he would screen an incoming call. Live Voicemail will display the voicemail on the screen, so that you can choose whether or not to answer the call. In order to maintain your privacy, the feature relies on your iPhone’s neuronal engine. The Live Voicemail feature is similar to Call Screen, which you can find on Google Pixel smartphones. This isn’t necessarily a negative thing.
Facetime messages
iOS 17 allows you to record video messages in FaceTime. This feature is a highly requested one that allows you to share and document important moments even if your call was missed.
Check in for Messages
iOS 17 includes a new tool for sharing your location called Check in.
Apple has simplified and expanded its location sharing through Messages. Check In lets loved ones know that you have reached your destination. If you are walking back home in the dark, or running early in the morning, you can create a Check In. As soon as you get home, your friend will be notified. It can also recognize if you haven’t reached your destination if you experience an unexpected event. Check In shares your current location with you, along with the route taken, and your iPhone’s battery life.
The Messages app gets a few fixes and enhancements
In iOS 17, the Messages application will have transcriptions of audio messages.
This tried and true Messages application gets a few updates. These include a new visual look for your iMessage applications, which no longer reside above your keyboard but are instead accessed via a + sign at the bottom-left.
Filters make it easier to search through Messages on iOS 17. If you search for a term in the Messages App, the search results can be narrowed.
Transcription of audio messages was also added. If your friends or relatives send you audio recordings, you can read a full transcription in the Messages application.
In Messages, there’s a “catch-up arrow”. This arrow is located in the upper right corner of the conversation. It allows you to jump directly to the message that you’ve not read. It could prove to be an invaluable tool for group chat management. Apple made the inline reply faster. You can swipe on any bubble to respond in iOS 17.
Apple fixes ‘ducking’ autocorrect
As autocorrect becomes more intelligent, it can now correct more grammatical errors. It is now easier to return words to the original typed. Autocorrect is able to learn curse words and will let you use them. Duck, yeah!
Stickers are now available in Messages.
The iMessage sticker drawer now allows you to store all your stickers in one location. Now emoji can be used as stickers. Peel and stick the emoji stickers to your message bubble. Rotate and resize them. Apple added the capability to remove a background from a picture as part of Visual Lookup in iOS 16 last year. iOS 17 allows you to turn the photo subject into a sticker within Messages.
Stickers also have a tab called Live Stickers that allows you to create Sticker animations (also known as GIFs) using a live photo. You can find Stickers in apps like Tapback and Markup, as well as third-party applications.

Apple’s WWDC keynote is not the only place to find improvements and additions. Among the highlights are:
- Siri will be activated by simply saying, “Siri”, rather than “Hey Siri”
- Maps offline download is available in the Maps application
- Safari now has new profiles and you can change your passwords
- Mail app: Automatically retrieve one-time Verification codes
- The iPad OS portion featured interactive widgets in depth.
iOS 17 should be available this fall for all iPhone XS/XR/2020 iPhone SE models.
