Arizona quarterback Jayden de Laura and Wisconsin safety Kamo’i Latu have settled a lawsuit filed by a woman who said the two sexually assaulted her in 2018 after a football game at their Hawaii high school.
In a document filed in Hawaii Circuit Court this week, Latu de Laura and the woman reached an agreement after mediation. The amount of the settlement wasn’t disclosed.
The civil complaint states that the woman claimed Latu & de Laura assaulted on her on October 18, 2018 at Saint Louis School where Latu & de Laura were football players. The woman and both players were minors.
In the civil lawsuit, it is stated that Latu pleaded guilt to second-degree assault by sexual means in family courts and was required to send a letter of apology to a woman. Neither received any jail sentence. In December 2021, the woman filed a lawsuit.
Arizona didn’t immediately respond to an email from The Associated Press seeking comment.
“At the time of Wisconsin football student-athlete Kamo’i Latu’s initial enrollment at UW-Madison, the matter being reported involving Latu was not known to UW Athletics officials,” Wisconsin officials said in a statement. ”As described, the matter relates to Latu when he was a minor and the juvenile records are sealed. The UW-Madison learned of the civil lawsuit filed last fall.
“Based on the information available to the UW-Madison Office of Legal Affairs and UW Athletics officials, the matter being reported that involved Latu prior to his time as a college student does not violate the UW Athletics Student- Athlete Discipline Policy, university misconduct policies, or reporting or disclosure requirements. Latu remains a member of the Wisconsin football team.”
Last season, both de Laura and Latu started the game.
De Laura, who played two seasons for Washington State before transferring to Arizona, completed 62.5% his passes with 3,685 yardage and 25 touchdowns. He also had 13 interceptions. He was third in the Pac-12 with 307.1 yards of passing per game.
Latu played two years at Utah, before moving to Wisconsin. Last season, he started 12 Wisconsin games and recorded 55 tackles. He also had two sacks as well as two interceptions.
