LG’s New OLED TV Series Gets up to 70% Brighter in 2020

At the massive CES 2023 consumer tech show here in Las Vegas (which we’re covering live), LG showed me its full lineup of new OLED televisions for 2023. A is the biggest addition.

They are, so far.

It’s called the M3 series and it looks amazing in real life, as shown in the video. However, it will likely be extremely expensive. As usual, the company didn’t reveal pricing at CES. Among TVs that average mortals will actually be able to afford, the most notable models include the C3, the successor to the best high-end TV for the money, as well as a G3 promising improved brightness.

There is a noticeable difference in the brightness of the LG OLED TVs between the current models and the newer ones. Light-boosting algorithms and new light control architecture increase brightness by as much as 70% when compared to last year’s G2 for the G3 55, 65 and 77 inch models. LG claims a brightness of around 1,800 nits. This is more than any OLED TV that I have measured. The TV I was able to observe looked very bright. However, I will have to wait to review it to confirm.

According to LG, 8K TVs from the company, called the Z3, have a brighter display than ever before. They are 30% to 40% brighter than the Z2. These TVs are only available in two sizes: 77- and83-inch. They will be very costly and not affordable for the majority of buyers.

OLED TVs have more features than high-end models and are bright enough to be used in most lighting conditions. However, every bit of brightness is helpful, particularly in bright areas and when watching TV and movies. Maybe the G3 can outperform the competition from Samsung or Sony in terms of light output. The and are better. It will be close if LG is correct in its brightness claims.

This is the same C3 as last year, except with a soundbar.

While the C3 is less costly than last year’s G3, its picture quality will remain largely the same as it was last year. The physical appearance of the 48-inch and 65-inch models was identical to mine when I saw them both in person. LG rep said that the soundbar bracket from C2 will work with the C3, which shows how similar the two are. LG told me that the C3 might look brighter due to a slightly higher average image level. However, it will not measure brighter so I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a significant difference.

LG has teased no other major improvements. The TVs have a new “α9 AI Processor Gen6.” In my tests however, I have not been able to detect any improvement in the processing. G3 was also given a more streamlined design by the company, which “leaves no apparent gap” when it is wall-mounted. According to the release, smart TV systems from companies, such as mine, have been improved to provide better categorization and personalized recommendations, along with a selection of “selected trending content.”

LG has updated its smart TV system to 2023.

LG’s 2023 OLED TVs were also certified by HDMI for Quick Media SwitchingVRR. This “can eliminate the temporary ‘blackscreen’ when switching between different content sources connected to the TV’s HDMI 2.0a-compliant ports.” The feature, which is minor in importance, is for video playback and not gaming. It requires a QMSVRR source device. For example, the feature will soon be available.

The LG C2 OLED TVs have been the most affordable TVs for their price range for the past few years. I believe the C3 will be able to compete with the C2 in this regard. The LG C2 of 2022 remains my favorite TV and I do not think any improvements have been significant enough to warrant a C3.

LG didn’t announce pricing or availability of its OLED TVs 2023, but the G3/3 and Z3 are certain to be more expensive than the C3. The prices of its OLED TVs are usually announced by the company in spring before they go on sale.
